This is a project in process. I had the idea to build structures from lace several years ago, but I lacked the skills to execute my ideas. My Flemish grandmother crocheted constantly and was known for making intricate lace table cloths. I wanted to use some of her patterns in my work but I did not want to damage the work she made. Over the past three years, I have taught myself to crochet, slowly moving from bulky yarn to a fine thread. I've learned my grandmother's patterns and picked up a few others along the way. Now, I am working on dipping the crocheted lace in porcelain slip and firing away the original thread to create a porcelain skeleton of the lace. The project isn't complete, I'm not sure exactly where it will lead, but I am enjoying the process, family connections, and mistakes I am making. The images here are mostly to document the process and share with those who are interested.
